ENGLISH GEORGIAN STYLE MAHOGANY ARCHITECT. Composed of late 18th century components during the early 20th century Item # 806BPP16Q. This is a gorgeous reproduction of an original George III architects desk, faithfully made using old components rescued from tables and desks to allow it to remain as authentic to the originals as possible. It was likely made at the turn of the 20th century, perhaps a bit earlier.

The quality and careful approach to matching patinas of each component is noteworthy and the timbers selected are top knotch. There is a transformational quality about the desk that is always so striking in these architect forms - the top lifts over hinges and a gated footing drops down from the back to allow it to be angled while the gate drops into grooves along a track for support; this can then be adjusted for height by lifting the entire top, which rises on a pair of hinged ratcheting posts. The front of the desk fully withdraws, including the front leg facades, another writing slope further rising from this section of the table, also secured on a hinged gating with grooved tracks. This writing slope can be pushed back to reveal a tidy storage compartment for papers and instruments, while a hidden drawer in the right side of the front rotates outward easily to give access to pens and ink. On either side of the desk are candle slides that are withdrawn on brass pulls at a sharp angle so that the candles are moved towards the architect. This is a very striking piece that remains in excellent overall condition and sturdiness for regular use in the study. 40 1/2 W x 24 D x 32 1/4 H.

Condition Report: A very carefully made reproduction using old (mostly 18th century) components; refinished, having a later s prayed shellac finish to each writing surface. Minor wear, scuffs and abrasion, overall remaining sturdy and strong. Missing one castor from a back foot. No key for the desk.
