FABULOUS 18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE TOWNSEND GODDARD NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND WALNUT CHIPPENDALE BALL & CLAW LEG DINING TABLE. With the highest possible compliments we are honored to offer you this extraordinarily important last half of the 18th Century true Townsend Goddard Walnut Chippendale drop leaf dining table on gracefully formed legs and the very finest Ball & Claw Talon foot feet.
The table is obviously in an untouched original finish and first surface. The only restorations we note are the re-forming of some of the very bottoms of the feet that had been worn done/deteriorated over the last 250 years. The work performed appears to be done in the last 50 years. Its a museum grade addressing of the re-definition of the feet and only the very base of some them. The legs have not been terminated and re-added. These are the original feet. Please, no question is too small and we are happy to assist you further on this topic.
The only other issue we observed is a few newer screws were installed to replace ones that had shook loose from the table box over the last few centuries. People do not lift these tables by their tops! It pulls them loose from the table's frame box.
The table box is a case study in the mechanics of pure Townsend Goddard Furniture. There are not many of these pieces on the market. These are highly prized & coveted by American museums and important private collections. This, as we noted, comes from the latter. The top is crafted from a series of walnut planks.
The table box is joined with a complex series of tight precise dovetails & pegs with half moon cut outs defining each end of it. The top is wonderfully scrubbed out and so nice to see in its original finish where one can observe the techniques of how the Townsend's & Goddard's formed and joined their tables.
In one photo of one of the table's half moon cut out legs we caught a shade line. We can only use a cost to marginal mark up formula. We will offer this table at a realistic price here The table is 47 1/2" long, 18 1/2" wide closed & 49 when the leaves are locked up supported by their base gate legs. The table stands 29 tall.
