The style of the Chippendale style table, was influenced by Chinese design, which was popular in Chinese architecture and furniture during the 18th century. Constructed with a finely carved pierced fretwork gallery, with a dentil top and gadroon moulded frieze below. The Chippendale style table boasts a decorative candle slide, with the original miniature brass knob. The table stands on a fluted tapering pedestal, decorated with scrolling bulbous acanthus leaves, above three cabriole legs, which are also decorated with trailing acanthus leaves to the knees and terminating on scroll toes. The Chippendale style table is stamped "Gostins" on the underside of the central pedestal. This is an ideal occasional table to display silver or photo frames around the house, or for use as lamp table. This Chippendale style table boasts a rich brown walnut colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This Chippendale style table would look superb in a variety of rooms from the dining / living room or the hallway.
The table would certainly grace any home or office and a great investment, as not only is it functional but also very attractive. Gostins of Liverpool was started by David Simpson, sponsored by the Princes' Trust, with the objective to train young apprentices in fine quality English cabinetmaking skills, something which has been lost to time over the last 100 years. They replicated a lot of designs from Speak Hall in Liverpool. The company went out of production in the 1990's as they could not afford to make furniture to such a high standard, after the advent of the owners' death. All furniture was handmade and it was usually stamped with their name. The Chippendale style table has been cleaned and French polished by hand to a professional standard in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination is of an excellent standard. Nominal old use marks to the top, frame and leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item (see photos). The pierced fretwork is in excellent original complete condition, given how fragile it looks. The pedestal is sturdy and there are no breaks to the legs. This Chippendale style table is solid in joint and ready to use. External Height = 66.5cm / 26¼" / 2ft 2¼".
