EXCEPTIONAL ROCOCO PARCEL GILT WALNUT MIRROR CONSOLE Continental, circa mid-19th Century Item # 604EJT18Q. A most fine and substantial presentation, this console and matched pier mirror embodies the naturalistic largesse of the Rococo spirit. A European work, probably Italian circa the second quarter of the nineteenth-century, it has diverse palette of color with brilliant gilding in the carvings around the frame, a border of parcel gilding with hints of red bole penetrating the gold, a reddish-brown walnut with nice depth and patina and an original black marble top. The variety of color is matched only by the fluid diversity of carving spanning both pieces - the crest is a most elegant pierced display of flanking acanthus and corner flourishes around a kidney-form central motif of foliate inspiration.
The same serrated foliage flourishes are reinterpreted in the mirror footing, the tops of each knee with a relief-carved kidney surrounded by acanthus over the draping foliage that highlights the leg edge. The scrolling apron is highlighted with a most fine rocaille treatment with serrated leaves edging the bottom.
Each leg is locked firmly in place with a tenon-mortised stretcher that swoops into an incredibly detailed display carved from a solid block of walnut and gilded with utmost skill. This is a rare and wonderful find, the condition throughout just lovely. It is a statement piece ideal for an open two-level foyer, where the impressive total height of 117 1/2 will be unimpeded and the fine crest work can be viewed from the landing. It is a work of art in every regard. 117 1/2 H together; [mirror] 80 1/4 H (total height including dowels beneath 81 1/4) x 45 3/4 W x 2 1/2 D; [console] 37 1/4 H x 50 3/8 W x 20 1/4 D.Condition Report: Chip losses throughout to carvings, wear through gilding revealing bole and gesso underlayers.
