The country's largest collection of fine Classical & Colonial Furniture... Just steps from the RISD Museum & John Brown House. A Rare Dishtop Chippendale Tilt Top Table, with Reeded Column, Newport, Townsend Goddard School, c. Newport is noted for its elegant yet simplistic design forms.
The shaft here is reeded and makes this table quite special, as most of these tables are just smoothly tapered. The leg on this table is quintessential Newport, with its small bulbous pad feet. Typical of Newport, this table does not have a birdcage. In looking at the detailed images below, one can see the clean surface on the area above the block, where air was not allowed to oxidize the surface around it. Note the worm damage on the block.
The top, of course, has been minimally polished and the wood is a heavy, dense, Chocolate brown Cuban mahogany and shows even ribbon graining. This is a connoisseur's table, who wants an untouched superior example of the Newport tilt top form. All offerings are in fine condition with no major repairs or replacements unless otherwise indicated in description. Item must be insured in full.
